“Chronic nicotinamide riboside supplementation is well-tolerated and elevates NAD+ in healthy middle-aged and older adults” is a study published in the online journal Nature Communications with leading author Chris Mertens and senior author Doug Seals from the University of Colorado Boulder.
The study was compound of 24 participants in good physical and health condition from the university’s surrounding area. Participants were both men and women aged 55 to 79. One group, 12 participants, were given nicotinamide riboside (NR) chloride (NIAGEN) during one month and a half and then they were treated with placebo. On the other hand, the other group was given a placebo for one month and a half and after that, they were treated with the nicotinamide riboside chloride. The amount of NR needed to be taken was 500mg twice a day for both groups (a total of 1g per day). Further, the team of experts conducted also physiological measurements as well as blood samples when each treatment period finished.
From the analyses, researchers discovered that 1 gram (1000mg) supplement of NR increased by 60% the amount of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) which plays the role of activating the sirtuins enzyme. Participant in the study didn’t complain about possible side effects. Researchers measured the systolic blood pressure on 13 participants who were recorded having stage 1 hypertension. After measurements, researchers concluded that the blood pressure was 10 points lower after participants were treated with the supplementation, which is, in other words, explained as a 25% reduction in the risk for experiencing a heart attack.
Researchers are convinced that not only the supplementation helps in restoring something which has been lost because of the age(NAD+) but it can also increase the work of enzymes which have the function of protecting us against stress. Furthermore, the supplement plays a role in the improvement of arterial health and blood pressure especially for people suffering from mild hypertension. The only worry of researchers is their study scale which is too low and for this reason, they have applied to profit from a grant by the responsible institutions for developing another study which tends to be larger in order to have better and larger results..
